Ill Move Sporadic (I.M.S) The Magnetic Mixtape

Growing up in West London Neil Cage and Ben 81 bonded in the early 90’s over a shared obsession with Hip Hop. Both were expelled from school for writing their own rules - a theme which has continued in today’s distinctive productions - preferring to spend time in record shops, writing on walls and playing out on radio. In the late ‘90s and during a brief stint at Art College, their passion for Hip Hop grew into a need to make their own beats. Scraping money together by any means necessary they built a studio in a derelict garage and formed Hip Hop collective Starch Music. A few years later they produced, distributed and promoted their first release, 12" single, No Windows, to glowing reviews in 2005 - "A stunning debut" – Mike Lewis (Lewis Recordings), HHC Magazine "Dusty drum breaks with some hard spat rhymes" - UKHH.com Despite positive media and peer acclaim Starch Music was canned in 2006 due to creative differences. Deciding to go it alone with a headstrong Fuck You attitude Ben 81 and Cage refined their style and formed Ill Move Sporadic, holding a clear agenda from the start - analogue is policy! Scouring record shops across the UK and Europe, theirs is a perpetual quest is for unique, untouched samples and breaks. Using old Emu and Akai samplers alongside vintage effects and compressors, the sound is raw, nonconformist, analogue, hard funk and film score-inspired Hip Hop. And so to Nov 2010 and we find Ill Move Sporadic on top of their game and poised to release their first CD, The Magnetic Mixtape, 13 tracks of hardcore Hip Hop music featuring various MCs from London and beyond. On this release their haunting, horror-inspired production and handpicked MCs robust flows and lyrics fuse flawlessly to create an uncompromising piece of work – their strongest yet.

Looking at that picture above, I know you would expect numbers across their chests (only joking lads) they may look like an intimidating pair, but my old English teacher always told me 'Never Judge A Book By It's Cover!' I couldn't agree more with this, The Magnetic Mixtape, gives me a kind of old skool feel with all the cuts and rewinds on some of the songs, in all honesty I don't think it should be considered a mixtape without some scratching, cuts etc - obviously there are some exceptions, but on this mixtape, it definately gives it that extra dyamic.

This mixtape is definitely a breath of fresh air, all the beats on this sound really analogue-ish, which gives it a great sound, I know we all like digital shit, because it makes everything sound so polished, but I love the sound of static from an LP on a beat, and this really gives it that appeal. I was quite taken back by some of the songs on this - the contrast from songs like 'Battle Axes' to 'Black Milk' is quite vast, but gives that bit more diversity, which is what a mixtape is all about, for artists to showcase all the skills in their repertoire. It also showcases the talents of a few other artists, if you have ever listened to the Saian Super Crew, then track 4 'Bunny' ft Kath will remind you alot of them, a bit of French rap, I don't speak fluent French, but this guy can flow that's for sure.

The standout tracks for me are:

Battle Axes ft Joey Menza

War ft 2 Man Army

Black Milk ft Ddubble

In conclusion, I had no idea what to expect when I was sent this, and I wouldn't say I'm just pleasantly surprised, I haven't heard a mixtape like this in a good while, from back to front, everyone brings it to the table - I will have to have a mooch around for a catalog of work from these guys because I am that impressed with this.

2 BIG thumbs up from me guys.

WabiSabi with RAKAA and DJ BABU @ TB2 // WED 17TH NOV

WabiSabi @ TIMBUK2 - WED 17TH NOV
RAKAA IRISCIENCE feat. DJ BABU
(DILATED PEOPLES)

EXCLUSIVE UK SHOW!!

WabiSabi proudly presents another hip hop showcase with Rakaa and DJ Babu, known as two thirds of the legendary west-coast crew, Dilated Peoples.  This is going to be the only show they're doing in the UK for this tour - don't miss this rare opportunity to catch them!

With just a few (mostly underground) releases, Dilated Peoples energised the hip hop underground in similar fashion to fellow West Coast crew Jurassic 5. The duo of Evidence and Rakaa came together in the mid-'90s, when they met at many of the same hip hop shows; after deciding to start making tracks together, they formed Dilated Peoples. Later they added to the fold an excellent turntablist, DJ Babu of the world-famous Beat Junkies.  As well as developing a solid fan base in the underground community, they have also succeeded to break into the Top 40 of the UK Singles Chart with "This Way (feat. Kanye West)" and "Worst Comes to Worst."

Rakaa has released his debut solo Album titled " Crown Of Thorns" in July and is already quoted as a future classic.  It is produced by fellow members Evidence and DJ Babu with guest production by The Alchemist, El-P, !llmind, Exile, Sid Roams, King Jahzzy, DJ Honda and Eric Bobo & DJ Rhettmatic.

Rakaa will be joined by DJ Babu, who has won multiple competition titles including the Vestax World Championships and multiple ITF titles.  Babu introduced the title “Turntablist” in order to differentiate what he was doing from more conventional aspects of DJ-ing.  He's also known as the creator of the most widely used scratch record: Super Duck Breaks (1996 Stones Throw Records).
Support from WabiSabi residents spinning all the funky get-downs plus more T.B.C.

Doors 9pm // Adv. Tickets from Bristol Ticket Shop for £8.50 + B.F.

WabiSabi is a Japanese phrase referring to finding beauty in imperfection. It's also the name of a new funk-fuelled, hands-in-the air type fun night in Bristol. Previous guests include: Akil, Jazzanova, 4Hero, DJ Format, DJ Vadim, Boca45, Parker, Nostalgia 77, Lack Of Afro, Flevans and Sweet Laredo.
This is a pretty special duo coming to Bris, and as they are only doing ONE show in the whole of the UK, we should all honour that and get our asses down there on the 17th.

Punishment - Hardest Artist

Here is the newest song from Bristol's own Punishment

Taken from his upcoming mixtape (Blood On The Mic, Murder I Da Booth) this video has been edited and directed by the man himself. It is quite a contrast to some local emcees who shoot videos for songs, and just compile a load of footage, not sync the vocals with the video, and put it out when it looks like straight ass!

This is completely different to a normal amateur job, Punishment shows alot of creativity with the editing and directing - it is a testament to Punishments creativity and diversity as an all round artist.

Sampling Irene Cara on this anthem-esque track, Punishment brings his gully style with a slight tinge of commercial appeal to this banger.

Once Punishment has released his mixtape, I will get a full review up on here.

Anyways, get out and listen to this shit - or in the words of Punishment 'PDP' all day!

The Last Man Standing Rap Battle Tournament

For those of you who don't know, The Last Man Standing Rap Battle Tournament is being hosted by 'The Hip Hop Lounge' & F*CK YOU TV.

With 32 participents, and all rounds being drawn a couple of weeks ago by Greenz, it is sure to be a fiery affair - 'Heat One' is due on Sunday (07/11/10) and there is definitely going to be some good battles - so if you are unaware of this tournament going on, just keep following this blog for updates.

The thing that is unique about 'The Last Man Standing' is it isn't just battle orientated, the further you get into the tournament, the more your skills as an artist come into play - In the latter rounds/heats, or even the start of the next round/heat, it will be a 'Song Contest' where both emcees are given the same beat, and see who can come up with the goods on it.

Personally, I think this way it will showcase alot more talent, because I know battles can be funny sometimes but being a one trick pony can stick with an emcee, I wouldn't want that kind of stigma attached to me.

I am not sure if there is a host site for this yet, but I will keep you informed throughout the duration (Even if I get knocked out).

Keep your ears to the ground, there is sure to be some good battles & tracks to come out of this.

M32 Connections Celebrating It's 4th Birthday

"I am wide, I am long, my barrier is strong, I am used everyday to come in or go away. You can walk me or drive me, see the grass right beside me, you can run me or ride me but there's no way to climb me. With St. Paul's on my right and Easton on my left, I am Bristol's spine bone and I'll rep to the death. I am the M32." - Suge (Da Label MTG)

I came across M32 connections a few years back, and I thought it was a great idea to showcase the talent in the Bristol area - I know they already have a blog for M32 connections, but fuck it, I am here to spread the word of good local music. M32 Connections have a vast array of emcees from all over the Bristol area, such as: The Label MTG, Triggadon, Blacksmith, Suge, and a whole lot more. It boasts alot of Bristol's underground scene, and brings it to the masses - we should all try and chip in and make M32 connections a force to be reckoned with, try and bolster up the forum they have, and get alot of the talent from Bristol to post regularly with new songs, updates etc - with how widespread the talent is over Bristol, names would get bigger, songs would be more popular. In my experience, word of mouth spreads like wildfire, so unifying the emcees around Bristol, wouldn't just be great for M32connections.co.uk, but for all parties involved.

The Bastard Sunz - Le Discotheque Martyrdom Review

The Bastard Sunz - Le Discotheque Martyrdom Review

First and foremost, Le Discotheque Martyrdom may not be to every hip hop fans cup of tea, but what is nowadays, however this cannot take away the abundance of talent portrayed throughout this 13 track onslaught of: Beats that will blow you away, and lyrical content that you would never want to play to your parents. The title of the album has a kind of circus feel to it, reminds me of an old book that came in a FHM magazine years ago called 'The Carnival of Grotesque' but just like a circus, it doesn’t fail to entertain you.

Mylo and B’Tilla are quite polished emcees, and from the get go the album has shades of Method Man & Redman’s ‘Blackout & Blackout 2’ the production on this is nothing short of outstanding, a few beats that stand out are: ‘White Spots’ produced by Rola, ‘Murder Factory’ produced by Krazy, and ‘The Scaboore Generals’ produced by Cutterz, however all production on the album is to a very good standard. The production on this CD is critical to the finished article, both Mylo and Tilla compliment each other on all 11 tracks they feature in together - you can tell they have a healthy rivalry on this album, which seems to have paid dividends, as it makes the album a lot more focused, with both artists bringing their A game and showing their hunger. The collaborations on this CD are quite a who’s who of UK music in general – Eva Lazarus blesses two tracks with some breathtaking vocals, Chattabox of ‘Dialect’ drops a verse, along with Junior Disprol, Turroe, Central Spillz, Joe Murphy of ‘Koopa’ & Kev Yates from ‘Forever Never’ All these guest spots just give the album that little more depth and diversity with regards to contrasting styles. They obviously put alot of thought into who would feature on this, and they have done it perfectly.

The standout tracks on the album are:

‘White Spots’ ft Chattabox - produced by Rola, the beat to this track is outstanding, Rola did such a good job on this, it really doesn’t sound like much else out at the minute, and all 3 emcees closed the album out nicely on this, however what stands out most about this track is the hook, it compliments the beat so well, not many emcees can write a good hook nowadays, but these two have created an absolute banger here for sure. I can honestly say, it will be on rotation in the car, and various CD players.

‘Crescendo’ ft Eva Lazarus – produced by Flipz, again production value is on another level on this, Flipz definitely delivered the goods. This is Mylo’s only solo track on the album, and he has shown how he can switch it up on this track, quite a personal track to the man himself, which I can’t really critique, but all the basic elements for a good song are there, and it gets a shove into an outstanding song with the pipes of Eva Lazarus, both did an immaculate job on this song. It is such an overwhelming song, Eva really does put the cherry on top of the cake with some breathtaking vocals, that will send shivers down your spine.

‘The Shades’ ft Joe Murphy of Koopa & Kev Yates of Forever Never – produced by Rola, this track is something we don’t see in hip hop much anymore, back in the days of Slick Rick with ‘The art of Storytelling’ it has seemed to have disappeared from the culture of hip hop somewhat, but never fear, B’Tilla the Cunt has brought it back with ‘The Shades’ which is a very good storytelling track. A good storytelling song should have good imagery, plot and it should paint a vivid picture of what’s going on, B’Tilla delivered all the above with this one – the guitar work over the beat was a excellent touch, Mr Yates and Murphy did a fantastic job.

In closing with a rap scene that has been diluted and watered down with the ‘Pop Culture’ the UK hip hop scene needs something a little bit different as a focal point - Le Discotheque Martyrdom brings two of the most talented emcees from the South West together, and they display what real raw talent is all about, something for the underground scene to bob it’s head too, but at the same time even with the content of some of the tracks, it has crossover/commercial appeal to it. It reminds me a of when ‘The Marshal Mather’s LP’ was released, which was one of the most rugged, yet critically acclaimed rap albums of our generation - and after a few listens, this has the same crossover/commercial appeal. The Bastard Sunz may not pander to the masses, or the teeny boppers following the X Factor, but unlike the X Factor these guys have talent!! When you hear B’Tilla’s verse in ‘White Spots’ you wouldn’t think that he would be capable of writing such a nostalgic and radio friendly track like ‘Chasing Clouds’ the same can be said for Mylo, when you hear him on a track like ‘Top Rank’ and then hear his track ‘Crescendo’ featuring Eve Lazarus, you start to realize how diverse these two really are.

I hope this is just the start of things to come for the Bastard Sunz, each track on this album just gets better and better with each listen, even though it is quite hardcore lyrically, the way it is delivered is actually quite subtle. The only drawback on the whole album is... I would have liked it to be a couple of tracks longer, it’s not much of a drawback, because you are getting a lot for your money with this album and I would recommend this to any serious hip hop fan, get out and purchase this gem of a CD – I don’t need to give this album a rating, it is just that damn good.
